As we get older, the lenses in our eyes lose some of their elasticity, and with this they lose some of their ability to change focus for different distances. The loss is gradual, and is what doctors call presbyopia. Only when the loss of elasticity impairs our vision to a noticeable degree do we recognize the change.
It’s no wonder that in Greek the words translates to “old eye,” as the condition presents itself in our later years.
Traditionally, reading glasses, those low-on-the-nose specs associated with librarians and doctors helped sharpen our vision when faced with this condition. But again, contact lens technology has created ways to correct presbyopia without the use of on-again off-again glasses.
